Nice project. The only thing you forgot is tsukamaki.
My project is converting a cheap replica (made in China) into a battle ready shinken, by welding a new nakago (it didn't had one), and making new tsuka which can fit.

dude ty for the manual it has helped make my swords come out better but personly i use a whet stone or a oil stone to sharpen the blade so you dont get grinding marks on the edge nd also i use i length of cloth or leather to bind the grip just for that authentic feel.

p.s. sorry for lack of japanese terms but its easier for probys to understand this way :)

Excellent article and a superb finish for a home build. for those who can afford a forge and have the skills, good luck in doing i your way. I will be making a ninjato thanks to this guide and they would have been inferior build to the legendary Kata, therefore this guide is very authentic ;)

Well done.

You actually have a mostly decent tutorial here.
But, and as some above have already stated, with all that trouble why no go ahead and select some decent carbon steel to heat treat properly into a usable blade?
Granted, if you did that you would need to strengthen your fittings (especially the handle), but shaping the blade and the saya are really the most difficult steps in the process.
On top of it all, you'd get to play with fire!
C'mon...that was one of the selling points for the whole blade-making thing for me! ;)

Take care!
