This
limited edition forged & folded Yu steel (tamahagane) tanto of the Diamond
class is a real masterpiece of the artisans at the forge of Fred Chen.
The
tanto is different from the katana and wakizashi in that way that the
latter two are slashing weapons where the tanto is more designed to stab.
The
Huanuo Forge of Fred Chen is only forging 50 tanto a year to distribute
worldwide ! The blade of this tanto is forge-folded with Tamahagane steel
and differentially hardened by using the traditional clay process. The
word Tamahagane can be spilt up in two words. The word Tama
which means "round and precious", referring to a jewel and the word hagane
which is the word for Steel in Japanese.
The
blade is hand polished by imported Japanese water stones and no drop of
acid is used to enhance the blade ! It's a long and very time consuming
work that need 13 phases to complete the tanto. The final stage of this
process is done with “finger stones”. They call it finger
stones because they are about one inch square, and are held in the fingers.
All
of the 50 tanto are almost forged and ready to leave the forge. The normal
