Practical Plus Katana

An upgraded version of the practical katana, a good choice when looking for your first katana

  • good quality vs. price
  • real rayskin on handle
  • real hamonline
  • good balance
  • suitable for cutting
My personal opinion top

The Practical Plus combat ready katana of Paul Chen is the big brother of the Practical Katana. It's made in a more 'traditional' way and probably the best deal if you're looking for good quality/price sword.

The blades of this sword and the practical katana are about the the same except for the hamonline. This samurai katana does feature a wave pattern hamon while the standard katana has a straight hamon. The lenght and thickness of the blades are almost the same.

This Paul Chen Practical Plus katana is combat ready but if You're looking for a 'good' cutter because you're planning to do a lot of (heavy)cutting tests this sword might not be the best deal for the job. We do recommend the Japanese samurai swords of the Jewel forge or the newly designed cutting swords of Paul Chen such as the practical XL light and the practical Plus Elite katana.

This practical plus sword features genuie Same (Ray skin) on the tsuka (handle), with a semi leather wrap (Tsuka Ito). The tang is double pegged witch makes it possible to change the tsuba of this sword very easely.

Within the last few years the smiths at the Hanwei forge did improve this sword in a very positive way. You can't expect the same result as buying a real nihonto which are priced at +6000 euro ,but you won't be disappointed when you have it in your hands !

Review by Filip Cornelis on Jul 04, 2009
Hello there,

My name is Filip. About 17 years ago me and a friend of mine were obsessed by samurai and eastern combat sports. We both owned our own katanas. The cheapest you could get, blunt, loose tsuka, really not worth the name katana. Ment for decoration of course...

A few weeks ago I was 'googling' the internet for the word "samurai sword" and this site showed up. My surprise was great. Lots of katanas in several price ranges, quality,... A few hours later I already ordered my 'real' Practical Plus Katana. Only 4 days later my order arrived! Quick delivery guaranteed! And then the unpacking, like a child on Christmas morning...

The first thing I noticed was the balance. The grip is good because the tsuka is wrapped with semi leather. And the question everybody wants to know: "Is it sharp?". My answer: "Yes". Never touch the blade of a katana! If you like to compare, touch a 'cutter' knife, the ones you cut wallpaper with, our open boxes. Due to the balance point you don't feel the weight a lot. The blades curve looks well, Tsuba and decorations are simple but beautiful, as a katana should be. The Hamon line on the blade is good. The point of the katana could be a little be better executed, but that's my opinion.

My overall rating is 8 on 10 for the Practical Plus Katana. For this price the quality is very good. Now my interest about katanas is 'reborn', my next project will be to design my own personal one! Thank you mr. Dave Lorrez!

Living in the EU, I had to find a retailer within EU in order to avoid trouble with Customs authorities. I was lucky to find the Samurai Sword Shop, where Dave was as helpful as one can get. I ordered the Practical Plus Katana (PPK) after settling on the following requirements:
- Real blade, made of differentially hardened high-carbon steel
- Sturdy, double-pegged tsuka
- Low price

The PPK fulfills them perfectly. To my untrained eye, it does not have any deficiency. I am not an experienced practitioner with a strong opinion on katana shape, weight, geometry and ornaments, and if you are like me, you can't go wrong with a PPK. On the contrary, spending more for a katana without having developed the need for it by training and studying, would be inappropriate.

This is a sword that demands real respect be virtue of being real and honest.

Great value for money

I ordered the Practical Plus Katana (PPK) after an extensive Internet study, without prior knowledge other than a short experience in kendo and a life-long interest in Japanese martial arts in general. My requirements ended up as aiming for:
- Real blade made from differentially tempered high-carbon steel
- Sturdy, double-pegged tsuka
- Low price

My choice was limited by the fact that I live in EU and if I ordered from outside the EU I risked trouble with Customs authorities. I was lucky enough to find the Samurai Sword Shop, were Dave was as helpful as one can get, and the PPK that seemed to be a good fit to my requirements.

After I received my PPK I can attest to that. There is no obvious deficiency to my untrained eyes. It is an honest replica sword that can serve as a wall-hanger as well as a weapon for practice. I'm not an experienced practitioner with a strong opinion on weight, balance, shape and ornaments, and if you are like me you can't go wrong with a PPK. On the contrary, buying anything more fancy and costly would be inappropriate until you develop the real need for it through extensive practice and studying.
